Snowmass is located within White River National Forest, adjacent to Snowmass Village and 12 miles from downtown Aspen, Colorado being one of the four mountains that comprise Aspen resort (Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass, and Buttermilk). It is best known for a family-friendly area with long, groomed cruising runs. Over 38% of Snowmass' terrain is steep and challenging. The Cirque, including runs like AMF and Gowdy's, is legendary among advanced skiers and riders. The Hanging Valley area - the closest thing to the backcountry, without actually going out-of-bounds. For snowboarders, Snowmass offers two halfpipes and acres of terrain-park riding and features some of the best expert skiing and riding terrain in the country.
